About The Practical Parent HQ

Hi, I’m Katie, the creator behind The Practical Parent HQ.

I created this space because, from the moment I became a mom, I found myself surrounded by endless advice. Books, social media, internet searches, and even people at the grocery store all seemed to have the perfect suggestion. Somehow, they all contradicted each other, and instead of feeling prepared, I felt completely overwhelmed.

The Practical Parent HQ was created to help families cut through the noise by sharing information that is actually helpful, realistic, and honest.

A little about me: I’m a former elementary teacher with a degree in special education, a mom of two boys, and someone who has always loved learning how things work.

A quick note about my kids: Because the internet is a scary place, I’ve made the decision not to share my sons’ faces online, and I’ll use pseudonyms when I write about them here. For the purposes of this site, you’ll know them as Everett and Callan — two names I adored and my husband did not.

I have diagnosable anxiety, a wild imagination, and a need to know things. Mix that with pregnancy and postpartum hormones, leaving my teaching career, and spending my pregnancy as a stay-at-home wife with endless time on my hands, and you can probably imagine the rabbit holes I went down.

I researched everything.

Looking back, I realize I put a lot of pressure on myself as a new mom. I was so afraid of making the wrong choices that I spent more time worrying than enjoying those early moments. Becoming a second-time mom has given me some perspective: there is no perfect parent, no perfect routine, and no one-size-fits-all solution.

There are just families figuring things out one day at a time.

That is what I want this space to be: a place where you can find practical ideas, honest experiences, and information that helps you feel more confident, not more overwhelmed.

You will never find a gimmick here. I won’t recommend a product I wouldn’t genuinely use. I won’t tell you there is only one “right” way to parent. I believe honesty matters, and I believe families deserve advice that respects their individual needs.

My approach to parenting is simple: keep the big picture in mind while making everyday life easier.

I think about what children need to grow into capable, kind, and confident people. But I also think about the reality of our everyday mornings: the spills, the diapers, the breakfast, the missing shoes, and the teeth that need to be brushed before we can actually get out the door.

The goal isn’t to make parenting perfect. It’s to make the everyday stuff run a little smoother so there is more room for the fun stuff.

That’s what you’ll find here: the routines, foods, activities, products, and systems that help our family run (mostly) smoothly. Some things will work for you. Some things won’t. We are all working with the same basic ingredients, but we each create something different.

Think of it like this: we can all walk into the grocery store and buy potatoes, beef, and carrots. In my house, that might become shepherd’s pie. Your family might make a pot roast. Someone else might turn those same ingredients into a sheet pan dinner.

My goal is not to give you a recipe you have to follow perfectly. My goal is to give you the ingredients, ideas, and encouragement to build what works for your family.

Parenting is the same way.

I hope this space makes you laugh. I hope it helps you feel less alone in the trenches of parenthood. And I hope it reminds you that you are doing better than you think.

Welcome to The Practical Parent HQ: a place for honesty, practicality, intention, and no judgment.

Because if you’re here, you’re already doing one of the most important things a parent can do: trying.
