My Go-To Fridge & Pantry Staples for Busy Parents

Practical Point

Keep protein, carbohydrates, and healthy fats that you can grab in under a minute stocked in your kitchen. When you’re caring for little kids, food you’ll actually eat almost always beats the perfect meal. Stocking quick options makes it much more likely you’ll actually eat enough throughout the day.

The Story

Both my babies have had sensitive stomachs while I was breastfeeding, which meant I had to eliminate lots of different foods. Some days, I would stare at all of our food and swear there was nothing I could eat. Through trial and error, reading nutrition labels, and my endless breastfeeding hunger, I finally figured out how best to keep myself fed.

The number one thing I learned is that I don’t always have time to assemble a meal during the day. Between library times, play dates, feeding the kids, and doing the chores, I just didn’t have the time and the energy to cook another thing.

There are days when I would start shaking from too much coffee and not enough food before I realized I hadn’t eaten since breakfast. I can’t count how many times I started to make myself lunch, but diaper changes, crying, or “Mama helps” would distract me and I would forget to eat entirely.

My goal isn’t gourmet meals. It’s making sure I eat enough to keep up with two little kids, breastfeeding, and working out.

Obviously, plenty of foods fit into more than one of these categories. I’m not trying to perfectly categorize everything by its macros. This is just the simple system I use when I’m trying to feed myself quickly.

Protein Staples:

  1. Rotisserie Chicken – Already cooked, extremely versatile, and high in protein.
  2. Jerky/Beef Sticks – Easy to grab and eat on the go.
  3. Hard-Boiled Eggs – An easy way to add some protein and fat to a meal.
  4. Protein Shakes – Great on their own, but they can also turn a smoothie into a much more balanced meal.
  5. Protein Bars – Filling, portable, and perfect for throwing in the diaper bag.
  6. Canned Tuna – High in protein, simple to whip up, and versatile.
  7. Yogurt – Great for smoothies, parfaits, dips, or a quick snack.

Carbohydrate Staples:

  1. Crackers – Eat them on their own or add chicken, hummus, or veggies to make it a meal.
  2. Rice Cakes – These are a vessel for holding tasty foods: peanut butter, tuna, or cheese.
  3. Granola Bars – A simple thing to grab when you’re on the go.
  4. Bread – Very versatile: toast for breakfast, a sandwich for lunch, and grilled cheese for dinner.
  5. Fruit – Easy to add to any meal, naturally sweet, and full of nutrients.
  6. Rice Pouches – Ready in 90 seconds and can make any meat into a meal.
  7. Oatmeal – Great for breakfast but can also be added to smoothies or yogurt to boost the carbohydrate content.

Healthy Fat Staples:

  1. Nut Butter – You can spread it on toast, apples, bananas, or just eat it with a spoon.
  2. Trail Mix – Grab a handful or fill a bag. Great to keep in your purse, diaper bag, or car.
  3. Nuts – Grab a handful for a snack or add them to a meal.
  4. Seeds – Grab a handful or add them to a meal for a fat and flavor boost.
  5. Cheese – The most versatile fat. Cheese can be added to crackers, sandwiches, and melted into almost any dinner.
  6. Avocado – Smash it on toast or turn it into guacamole.
  7. Hummus – Add it to crackers, veggies, or sandwiches for an easy way to make them more filling.

How I Throw Together a Quick Meal

When I don’t have time to think about what to eat, I try to grab something from each category:

1 protein + 1 carbohydrate + 1 healthy fat

That’s it. It doesn’t have to be a beautifully balanced meal. It just needs to be something filling that I can put together quickly and actually eat.

Quick Meals I Throw Together:

  1. Rotisserie chicken, cheese, and rice. (I add coconut aminos to the rice for extra flavor.)
  2. Rotisserie chicken, crackers, and hummus.
  3. Canned tuna, rice, and trail mix.
  4. Rice cakes, peanut butter, sunflower seeds, honey, and banana slices.
  5. Oatmeal, chia seeds, flax seeds, and honey with a hard-boiled egg on the side.
  6. Cheese, crackers, fruit, and beef jerky.
  7. Smoothie: protein powder, frozen fruit, banana, chia seeds, flax seeds, yogurt, and milk.
  8. Toast, avocado, and a hard-boiled egg.
  9. Crackers, tuna, and avocado.
  10. Yogurt, fruit, and nut butter.

Practical Snacks: One Minute or Less

  1. Protein bar
  2. Banana and nut butter
  3. Hummus and peppers
  4. Trail mix
  5. Jerky/beef sticks
  6. Hard-boiled eggs (I love to add horseradish mustard for a deviled egg feel.)
  7. Yogurt with flax seed meal

One Last Practical Thought

You don’t need a pantry full of “health foods,” just a few staples that can be diversified into lots of different snacks or meals. Whether you’re running out the door or just chasing around the kids, fast, filling, and tasty foods are a must.

Every family, and every season of parenting, is different. I’m not here to convince you to do things exactly the way we do them. I’m simply sharing practical ideas that have made our lives easier. Take what works, tweak what doesn’t, and leave the rest behind. If one small idea makes your day easier, this post has done its job.

Practical Parent Picks

If I recommend a product here, it’s because it’s something we’ve actually used or something I genuinely think could make parenting a little easier. Some of the links below are affiliate links, which means I may earn a small commission if you purchase through them—at no additional cost to you. Thank you for supporting The Practical Parent HQ.

  1. Simple Mills Rosemary & Sea Salt Crackers: I buy these every week at the grocery store. They’re so yummy and filled with ingredients I can actually pronounce! Bonus: they are gluten, dairy, soy, and egg free.
  2. RX High Protein Bars: To say I am obsessed with these is an understatement. This is the number one thing I grab in the middle of the night, when we are running out the door, or when I need an afternoon snack to tide me over until dinner. Bonus: gluten, dairy, soy, and egg free.
  3. Protein Powder: This protein powder is my favorite and the one I use in my smoothies. It is designed with pregnancy and breastfeeding in mind and is also gluten, dairy, and soy free. It makes it incredibly easy for me to turn a smoothie into something much more filling. Seriously, I love it. Use this link to get 10% off your order!
  4. Balanced Breaks: These are some of my favorite quick-to-grab snacks. They are tasty and contain a decent amount of protein. There are various types, but there are gluten- and soy-free options.
  5. Hard-Boiled Egg Maker: This is the greatest kitchen tool I own. I literally can peel hard-boiled eggs with one hand. The way this steams the eggs makes them incredibly easy to peel, which is the worst part of making hard-boiled eggs.
  6. Beef Sticks: I’m actually drooling while I’m writing this. These are savory, filling, and tasty. I love to grab them on the go or as an add-on to a meal for a protein and fat boost.
